Learn about Mouth cancer

Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is a type of cancer affecting any part of the mouth including lips, tongue, cheeks, the floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx (throat). It’s part of a larger group of cancers called head and neck cancers and is significant for its potentially aggressive nature if not diagnosed early. According to the World Health Organization, there were approximately 377,713 new cases of lip and oral cavity cancers worldwide in 2020, showcasing its global prevalence.

Causes

Mouth cancer, like many other cancers, arises from mutations in the DNA of cells within the mouth that lead to uncontrolled growth and spread of these cells. Several factors have been identified as potential causes of mouth cancer. These include tobacco use of any kind, excessive alcohol consumption, excessive sun exposure to the lips, a sexually transmitted version of the human papillomavirus (HPV), and a diet lacking in fruits and vegetables.

Signs and symptoms

- A sore on the lip or mouth that does not heal - A white or reddish patch on the inside of the mouth - Loose teeth - A growth or lump inside the mouth - Mouth pain - Ear pain - Difficult or painful swallowing - Unexplained bleeding in the mouth - Numbness in the face, mouth, or neck

Diagnosing Mouth cancer

Diagnosis of mouth cancer begins with a physical examination by a healthcare provider, who will check for any lumps or abnormal changes in the mouth. The definitive diagnosis is made through a biopsy, which involves taking a small sample of tissue from the suspected area and examining it under a microscope for cancer cells. Imaging tests like X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and PET scans may also be used to determine the extent of the cancer.

Prevention and natural treatment

Prevention of mouth cancer involves reducing or eliminating risk factors. This includes cessation of tobacco use, reducing alcohol intake, limiting exposure of the lips to the sun by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen lip balm, eating a well-balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and considering HPV vaccination. The traditional treatment for mouth cancer includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or combinations of these. However, when considering natural treatment and preventive approaches, functional medicine offers additional insights by focusing on the body as a whole and addressing the root causes of health issues. Nutritional strategies play a significant role in both prevention and complementary treatment. A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in antioxidants, can help protect cells from damage that may lead to cancer. Additionally, supplementation with vitamins and minerals, under the guidance of a healthcare professional, might support the body’s natural defenses. Lifestyle changes, including stress management techniques, such as yoga and meditation, have been suggested to strengthen the overall health and well-being of an individual, potentially impacting cancer prevention and recovery positively. Herbal and botanical treatments, under supervision, may provide relief from some treatment side effects and improve quality of life, but it's crucial to consult healthcare providers to ensure they do not interfere with conventional cancer treatments. It’s paramount to remember that while natural treatments can complement traditional cancer treatment modalities and potentially bolster prevention, they should not replace conventional medical treatments prescribed by healthcare professionals. Collaboration between healthcare providers, including those specializing in functional medicine, can ensure the most comprehensive care.
